Dallas Cowboys Inside Slant
The first week in training camp has made one thing obvious. The Cowboys are deeper and more talented than they were last season. Considering they went 13-3 and had the best record in the NFC in 2007, it's a comforting thought for the Cowboys. They know they are good. They know they are going to make the playoffs and have a good regulation season. But they have also learned a lesson from a year ago and refuse to get ahead of themselves.

Dallas Cowboys Notes, Quotes
--WR Danny Amendola has caught the eye of his teammates and coaching stuff through the first week of camp, so much so that he has a good shot at making the final roster. "I think he'll be competitive to make the team," coach Wade Phillips said. "You can see that right now." Phillips said he makes cuts without slowing down. Terrell Owens said he's like a water bug out there. "He's definitely shown that he can play at this level," Owens said.

Dallas Cowboys Strategy and Personnel
--The contracts of top picks Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins were among number of rookie first rounders kicked back by the league on Friday. However, the Cowboys quickly changed the language in the deals so the rookies would not have to miss any practice time. On Jones, the Cowboys had a bonus tied to a not likely to be earned incentive of leading the team in any offensive category.

Peter King: Who will crack first in Favre-Pack standoff?
Ten nights ago, I sat in Brett Favre's Mississippi home, and a couple of times during our discussions he said he wanted Packers general manager Ted Thompson to release him. Folly, I thought, and I told him so. "Brett," I said, "the Packers will release you over Ted Thompson's dead body. They're not going to give you the chance to run through the tunnel opening night as a Viking." Favre was not moved. He heard me, but I don't think he believed me.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton runs with the football during NFL football training camp, Sunday, July 27, 2008, in Oxnard, Calif. Crayton, a former seventh-round pick who was a quarterback and receiver at NAIA school Northwestern Oklahoma State, set career highs with 50 catches for 697 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Patrick Crayton hears that outside talk about the Dallas Cowboys needing another veteran receiver, somebody in the No. 2 spot to complement Terrell Owens. The chatter comes even though Crayton aptly handled the role last year when Terry Glenn, waived at the start of this training camp, didn't play until the regular season finale.

Andrews is battling depression and might arrive at training camp this week, the two-time Pro Bowl selection told a newspaper Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. In an exclusive interview with the Philadelphia Daily News from his Arkansas home, Andrews said his depression started a year ago and has worsened.

Hard Knocks Ep. 1: What did we learn?
Maybe my memory’s just a little hazy on how exciting the 2002 Hard Knocks was (because it didn’t seem this good), but that was pretty cool. I had a stupid grin slapped across my face for the entire hour, knowing for sure that Redskins fans are just hating this with every ugly fiber of their [...]

Training camp breakdown: the linebackers
It’s hard to pinpoint a real point of strength on this team because there are simply so many. The corners probably get the most publication thanks to Pacman’s hard charge for a starting spot in camp, Mike Jenkins’ flashes of sheer athletic ability and the come-uppance of UFA Evan Oglesby. Running back is another natural [...]

Figuring the roster - Defense edition
As this years’ training camp continues on, it’s becoming clear that it’s strikingly, well, typical. No huge stories, no uber intriguing battles between fan faves and established vets — which is odd considering Hard Knocks picked this year to visit. The Amendola vs. The World, Anthony Henry vs. his own ego and Marcus Spears vs. [...]

Stock up/stock down - who’s hot, who’s not?
Let’s check out a little list I recently found from DMN writer Calvin Watkins on players who’s stocks have been on the move at this point in training camp. Assessments are fun. Stock Up 1. Isaiah Stanback. Is improving his route running and is catching the ball. 2. Terrell Owens. Getting behind the defense and winning one-on-one battles. 3. [...]

Offense Enters Next Phase: Preseason Games
It was easy in the spring. The defense wasn't allowed to hit, the pads weren't on, and the offense looked like a collection of superstars running routes and throwing the football against, basicaly, air.

A Sampling Of The Day That Was For The Eagles
Did you ever have one of those days when you were part of so many things going on that it was just hard to pinpoint one or two good stories? That was the kind of day I had on Monday at Lehigh University. The football side was great, with the Eagles going through their final day of full-pad and full-contact drills, and the things that happened off the field were interesting all around, too.

Special Teams Take On Crucial Test Vs. Steelers
It isn't fair to say that Rory Segrest has no clue about what he really, truly, no-doubt-about-it has from top to bottom on special teams. Segrest knows, for example, that David Akers has a great track record as the best kicker in Eagles history and that he has had a terrific off-season. He knows he has a baseline, season-long performance to project expectations for second-year punter Sav Rocca, a daily story last year who is now the punter. Period.

Random Thoughts And Things I Think I Think
Two weeks into camp, and things have gone well for the Eagles. The practices have been crisp and up-tempo and physical. Andy Reid has been a vocal, aggressive head coach. He has clearly been more visibly demanding in his 10th camp. How have the Eagles progressed to this point? Who has stood out? Best moments? Players who need to pick it up?

2008 Offense: Something Different Is Brewing
It was just one play in a practice that some day may mean nothing at all. But when Donovan McNabb dropped back three steps and lofted a fade pass into the left corner of the end zone to Hank Baskett, who leaped high and made the catch for the touchdown, well, it felt different. It felt new. It felt like the Eagles offense as it is being sculpted for 2008 is going to have more zig and zag to it than in past seasons.
